You found the trip, picked your dates, and then spotted a cheaper rate on the resort website. So why book with the hosted group? We get the question. We have asked it ourselves.
In Tuesday Talks 127, Mike and Mallory explain why they chose a Hedo week with Scott and April of Naughty Gym: they could book directly with the resort and still join the group. That opens up an honest conversation about what a hosted booking pays for, where group benefits begin, and how to choose a trip that fits your budget.
Why can booking with the group cost more?
A room rate does not tell the whole story. When hosts bring in DJs, staff, extra sound and lighting, or put together a glow night, pool party or beach event, those extras have a cost. Splitting that cost across group bookings helps make the experience possible.
We talk about our own first Hedo trip, when we noticed a difference between booking directly and booking through the hosting agency. Asking what the extra money covers is completely reasonable. The answer depends on the particular group and event; we are not saying every agency adds the same charge or offers the same benefits.
There is also a difference between a partial-resort group week and a full takeover. At Hedo, guests may be able to book independently for the same dates. In the Secrets takeovers we discuss, the whole resort is part of the event, so booking elsewhere is not a cheaper route into that same takeover.
Does a direct booking include the group perks?
Being at the same resort is not automatically the same as having a group booking. Swag bags, private chats and pre-trip Zoom calls take money or work to organize. Those calls and chats can also help you recognize a few friendly faces before you ever reach the pool, especially when you are new.
We love including people. But if guests who book independently receive every extra, what happens to the value for the people whose bookings helped fund it? That is the boundary we are trying to explain, not a reason to make someone feel unwelcome.
Mike and Mallory found an arrangement that worked for them. We do not know the details of Naughty Gym’s agreement with the resort, so we cannot present that arrangement as a policy every host can offer. Ask your chosen group what is included before you book.
What if the price difference matters to your budget?
Then it matters. We say plainly in this episode that if the difference would keep you from going or put pressure on your finances, we understand choosing the lower rate. Just keep expectations clear about which group extras come with your reservation.
If you can comfortably support the group creating the experience you want, using its booking link helps pay for that experience. And that applies beyond us: choose the people and atmosphere that fit you.
